Search Engine Optimization (SEO) can be defined as the activity of optimizing your site’s web pages to make them more search engine friendly. This will help rank your website higher. To understand SEO, you need to understand how search engines work.

Search engines crawl the Web, looking at different items in a site to know what the site is about. This is done by software called a crawler or a spider. They do not see images, Flash videos, JavaScript, password protected pages, directories and frames so if your site is dependent on these tools, then your site ranking can be affected. After a page is crawled, the collected information is indexed in a large database from where it can be accessed later on. This is where selecting specific keywords come in. when a search result is typed, the search engine processes the information from its database and compares the typed in keywords with those on various sites. Only the relevant sites are shown in the results. So while developing your website, you need to keep in mind this information and optimize your site for search engines accordingly.
